Housebreaking

The Lagotto is so easy to train in so many aspects of their life, which leads many to wonder why it takes them so long to figure out housebreaking. My theory is that the lagotto is not a dominant breed of dog. They do not tend to mark their territory (until well past maturity for those who do mark) and they don't stop to sniff and circle before going. The good news is that they can be housebroken and once they get it, they get it!

  • Don't set your puppy up to fail
  • Take them out immediately after eating, drinking, waking & every 15-20 minutes while playing
  • If you are not actively engaging with the puppy, put them in a puppy play yard, tether them to a table leg or put them in their crate to nap
  • Harsh Scolding for an accident may cause submissive urination (I'm sorry, see, I'm not trying to be dominant over you). Never scold for submissive urination.
  • Learn your pup's predictable behaviors and set them up to succeed! Give potty time a name and location and reward as soon as they go.
  • Many have succeeded with tying a bell to the door and teaching puppy to ring it every time they go out

We are here to support you, cheer you on & help you succeed
